THREE OF FIVE PLATFORMS RE-OPENED AFTER WEEKEND TRAIN FIRE

Cape Town – Metrorail has re-opened platforms 8 – 10 for business at Cape Town Station. Regional manager Richard Walker expressed his gratitude to technical teams that worked around the clock since Saturday evening to restore full functionality: “These dedicated employees were determined to re-open the platforms as soon as possible”.

Platforms 8 – 12 were closed after two trains were set alight on Saturday evening (9 April 2016). Walker says platforms 11 and 12 took the brunt of the fire and would remain closed until the structural engineers report is received. “The re-opening of three platforms alleviates the need to cancel additional trains to create capacity at platforms; the only cancellations will be the time slots that would have been served by trains destroyed in the fire”.

Metrorail advised that commuters could expect delays of 15 – 30 minutes as a result of the two platforms still out of service at Cape Town Station.
