PROTEST ACTION FORCES METRORAIL TO SUSPEND SERVICE BETWEEN NYANGA AND KHAYELITSHA

Cape Town – Metrorail has been forced to withdraw train services on its Nyanga – Khayelitsha/Kapteinsklip corridors until further notice. The temporary withdrawal was prompted after protesters destroyed equipment during protests against police raids in the area.

Regional manager Richard Walker said it is not the first time that a community had vented its frustration on the rail network: “Regrettably trains are invariably the first target because protesters know the impact of a suspended train service”. Walker strongly condemned the action, saying that innocent commuters are victimised: “Our commuters are not involved in this altercation and should not be made the scapegoats”. “The destruction of state assets should not be used as leverage to get the desired outcome of your protests” he said.

Trains serving the area terminate at and depart from Nyanga Station, affecting transport to and from the following eleven stations:

Philippi,

Mandalay,

Chris Hani,

Lentegeur,

Nolungile,

Mitchells Plain,

Nonkqubela,

Kapteinsklip,

Khayelitsha,

Stock Road and

Kuyasa.

Metrorail has also closed the ticket offices at the stations to protect commuters, employees and infrastructure. “We are in the midst of completing repairs of the damage wrought in the aftermath of last year’s illegal electricity protest – we now have to start all over again” Walker said.

He apologised to commuters for delays as a result: “We continue to monitor the situation closely and will reinstate services as soon as it is deemed safe to do so”. “We encourage commuters to follow the status of the service for this afternoon’s peak hour on our social media and other passenger information channels”.

Commuters who require proof of delays for employers may request letters of confirmation at stations or register for the ‘Email my boss’ option on the mobi-site www.GoMetroApp.com.
