Regional manager Richard Walker announced that Metrorail’s customary seasonal holiday train service adjustments takes effect during the approaching festive season recess: ‘While our customers take a well-deserved break, our technicians will have no respite. The December/January reduced weekday train service is fully utilised to maintain and repair infrastructure in preparation for the start of the work/school term next year’. A summer train timetable is included in the last 2014 issue of commuters’ free newspaper MyLine.
He assured the public and visitors to Cape Town that the increased demand for trains on public holidays is matched with additional trains to the beach. Weekday schedules are adjusted to cater for lesser demand and some additional trains provided on public holidays during this period.
Walker said Cape Town will be filled with summer visitors, providing increased opportunity for petty crime: “The police advise commuters against travelling with large sums of cash and openly displaying valuables”. He assured commuters that Metrorail Protection Services and other law enforcement agencies will be on duty to ensure that customers travel without fear and shared advice: “Be aware and alert – following simple safety tips in mind greatly reduces the chance of misfortune’.
“We wish commuters and visitors a safe festive season but caution against reckless travelling practices – please take note of our travel tips recommended for your safety“.
